How to Compare Wood Chip Delivery Quotes

How to Compare Wood Chip Delivery Quotes Image

To compare wood chip delivery quotes fairly, put every offer on the same basis: material specification, delivered quantity, unloading method and total cost. A low headline price can become poor value if the load is wetter than expected, contains the wrong grade or needs hours of extra handling. Here is how to build a comparison you can actually use.

Compare Wood Chip Delivery Quotes Fairly

Start with the intended use, rather than asking for the cheapest wood chips. Boiler fuel must suit the appliance and feed system. Material for planted beds needs a different specification, while a play surface needs confirmation of suitability for that particular application. A supplier cannot compare these products accurately from quantity alone.

Write a short brief containing the site postcode, intended use, required volume, preferred delivery date and photographs of the access. Ask each supplier to quote against the same brief. Keep optional services separate so that one offer is not silently including work another excludes.

Compare cubic metres with cubic metres

A loose cubic metre describes space occupied by chips and the air between them. A tonne describes mass. Neither converts into the other at a fixed rate. Forest Research gives an indicative chipped-wood bulk density of around 200–400kg per loose cubic metre; this is a broad technical range, not a promise about any particular delivery. Ask whether the quote uses loose volume, measured mass or a declared bag volume. A “tonne bag” is a container description, not proof that it holds one tonne of wood chips. For wood chip bulk bags, request the actual filled volume in litres or cubic metres.

Planning a wood chip order?

BioMass Woodchip Ltd supplies wood chips across the North West. Discuss the material, quantity and access arrangements for your site, including:

Work out the complete delivered cost

Make a comparison sheet with a line for material, transport, unloading, any access surcharge and VAT where applicable. Ask whether the quotation includes all of them. Check whether a minimum order, waiting charge or failed-delivery charge could change the total, without assuming every supplier applies these charges.

For an illustrative calculation, a £240 delivered load containing 4m³ costs £60 per loose cubic metre. A £270 load containing 5m³ costs £54 per loose cubic metre. These are invented arithmetic examples, not our prices. The second offer is cheaper by volume only if the material specification and delivery arrangements are equivalent.

Include the cost of moving the material

The unloading point matters as much as the gate location. A delivery left on the front drive may still need moving through a narrow passage to the back garden. Estimate the number of trips, available helpers and equipment before deciding whether a lower transport price is worthwhile.

For an assumed 2m³ order and a wheelbarrow carrying an effective 0.05m³ per trip, the arithmetic gives 40 trips. Real loads and safe handling capacity vary. If the transfer route makes that impractical, ask whether bulk blown wood chips could suit the site; hose reach and operating conditions need individual confirmation.

Use quality information to explain price differences

For fuel, ask for the declared moisture content, particle specification and evidence that it meets your boiler manual. Compare energy costs only when the energy figure and efficiency assumptions are stated. For landscaping, request information about source material, approximate texture and any restrictions on the intended use.

Do not treat a photograph of a tidy load as a complete specification. Nor should a cheaper mixed product automatically be dismissed: it may be suitable for a less decorative job. The important question is whether you are buying an appropriate material consistently, rather than paying for a label that tells you little.

Confirm what happens if the order is different

Before accepting a quote, agree how quantity will be recorded and how you should raise a concern. Keep the written specification, order confirmation and delivery note together. If an issue is visible on arrival, discuss it with the driver or supplier before the material is dispersed around the site.

Ask how long the quotation remains valid, whether substitutions require your agreement and what information the supplier needs if access changes. A clear answer is useful purchasing information. It does not guarantee that one company will always be cheapest, but it makes the comparison more transparent and reduces avoidable misunderstandings.

Summary

A useful quotation tells you what material arrives, how much arrives and where the delivery finishes. Give BioMass Woodchip Ltd your intended use, measurements and access details so the discussion starts with a comparable specification, rather than an ambiguous load price.
